Developed by Big Bite in collaboration with the New York Post, The Shout is a responsive WordPress block that enables fast, flexible short-form video and story card publishing directly within the CMS
As video becomes the primary language of the internet – driven by the explosive growth of platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts – The Shout empowers publishers to easily leverage the format that now defines how audiences consume news. It gives editorial teams a streamlined way to create swipeable, socially native stories that live entirely within their own platform, with no workarounds or third-party tools for maximum control.

Engaging multimedia support
The Shout supports both imagery and video, creating a rich visual experience that’s optimised across desktop, mobile, and app views. Editors can include short-form video with optional sound, giving users control over playback with mute/unmute toggles – ideal for accommodating different viewing preferences and environments, from commuting to late-night scrolling.
Flexible headlines and calls to action
Each story card includes fully editable headlines and buttons, with the flexibility to use free text or images, add calls to action, or leave them out entirely. Editors can choose from headline-only, button-only, both, or neither, tailoring each story card’s structure to suit its purpose and audience, while keeping everything on-brand and easy to update.

Theme-based customisation
Built with title-specific theming in mind, The Shout supports branded colour schemes, fonts, and styles for different news segments such as NYNXT or Sports Minute. From button backgrounds to headline formatting, every design detail can be aligned with the segment’s identity to deliver a consistent and recognisable user experience across the board.
Swipe-style navigation
Readers can swipe or tap through a curated series of story cards, with navigation arrows – aka wings – styled to match the look and feel of each theme. Whether used in an article, on the homepage, or inside the NYP app, this swipeable format keeps audiences engaged and makes it easy to consume content in a familiar format
Customisable progress bars
Drawing on the visual cues of social platforms, each card features a coloured progress bar that signals the number of updates or cards in a sequence. Editors can easily adjust the bar’s length, colour, and style to match the story’s theme, helping readers navigate the experience intuitively and stay engaged from start to finish.
Integrated ad slots
To support monetisation without disrupting flow, each story card includes a built-in space for a banner ad at the base of the content. These placements are designed to complement editorial styling, offering a balanced experience that benefits both readers and advertisers, and opens up additional revenue opportunities for publishers.
