Top of the blocks – transforming editorial workflows

The Gutenberg block editor offers incredible advantages to global newsrooms and digital publishers – here we highlight some of the most impactful plugins and blocks we’ve developed to date.

Editorial Notes

Initially created for The Wall Street Journal, this plugin enables writers and editors to directly add, edit, reply to or delete comments within the Gutenberg editor. It also includes a timeline of all comments, and users can leave a general comment against an article rather than just against highlighted content.

Collage Creator

Exclusively developed on behalf of the New York Post, Collage Creator gives editorial teams the ability to put together collage images in a wide range of layouts directly within the editor. Users can also custom crop and overlay images, and preview collages before committing to adjustments, negating the need for external imaging software.

Product Reviews

As part of a much larger project for Macworld and its publisher, we developed a product reviews block that enables its editorial teams to create posts within a fixed review format that includes a description, star rating, pros and cons, and overall verdict of an item. The functionality also allows users to mark products as an ‘Editor’s Choice’ item, and product prices are automatically added to reviews from linked vendor databases.

Multi-Title

Built for The Times and now used by several publications under the News Corp umbrella, the Multi-Title block enables editorial teams to easily add multiple titles – e.g. long, short, and SEO titles – against individual posts so each version can be utilised in different formats as required.

Hero Builder

To enable Gumtree’s editorial teams to independently create interactive banners for its content hubs, we developed a Hero Builder that allows users to quickly produce hero blocks and include images, titles, buttons, breadcrumbs and search boxes where needed. The tool also includes several styling options, all within the parameters of Gumtree’s brand guidelines.
