In a fast-paced industry where learning and improvement is a continuous process, there’s never been a more exciting time to join the engineering team at Big Bite, no matter your current skill level.

We’re looking for a number of ambitious individuals who have a passion for code to be the first to complete our tailored in-house training and development program. Its simple – for the first three months of your employment with us we’ll take you through a range of key development skills using various learning techniques to get you to where you need to be. After three months, you’ll buddy up with some of our senior developers on live client projects, and after six months we hope that you’ll be confident enough to apply your new skills with a little more independence, ultimately leading on to a long and prosperous career with Big Bite.

All of the training will take place in our office at Boho One, Middlesbrough, and you’ll get to work with some of the region’s most talented WordPress engineers to learn a variety of best practice development techniques. We’re not your typical WordPress agency as you may know it – our team is multi-disciplined in modern web standards and we work with some impressive clients including The Times, Amnesty International and Octopus on custom tools built on the powerful WordPress platform. For some examples of the type of work we do, head over to our blog and case studies.

Throughout your training with us, you’ll pick up some modern development skills including:

Languages:

  • PHP 7+
  • JavaScript ES2015+
  • CSS
  • HTML (inc. a11y)

Tooling:

  • Git
  • Sass
  • Webpack
  • Docker
  • CI (Travis or Github Actions)
  • NPM
  • Composer

CMS/Frameworks:

  • WordPress
    • Gutenberg Blocks
    • REST API
    • CLI
    • Plugins
    • Themes
    • Unit Testing: PHPUnit
  • React & React Native
    • Redux
    • Unit Testing: Jest

We don’t believe in paying people less to learn, so despite being on a temporary contract for six months, you’ll be entitled to all the benefits we offer all of our employees. You’ll be paid an annual salary of £21,000 and once you have completed all the training, we’ll move you onto a permanent contract and review your salary in line with your progression and current skill set.

You’ll have regular check-ins with key members of the Big Bite team to ensure that you’re heading in the right direction. We’ll also be flexible to your current knowledge, so if there are areas you’re stronger in we can adapt the learning strategy to suit your needs.

Why are we doing this?

Developers are hard to find in the local area, especially for the type of projects we work on. The work we do doesn’t rely on speed or quantity – our projects are complex and each one can take anywhere from six months to two years to complete. We meet lots of talented developers that we’d love to have as part of our team, but sometimes there are areas that need improvement. By helping people to learn our own ways of working and WordPress VIP best practices, you’ll be able to refine your skills and work alongside our own engineers to evolve.

Interested in applying?

We want to hear from everyone, regardless of your current skill level. Each application will be looked at individually and we’ll be in touch to let you know if you have been successful. Places are limited (our aim is four people) as we want to give each new employee the best chance for a long term career at Big Bite.

If you’re not up for the challenge after six months, you’ll still go away with the skills needed to get a job in development.

If you’ve got basic coding knowledge and you’re eager to pursue a successful career in WordPress engineering, you’ll be a great fit for our program and we’d love to hear from you. Drop us an email, including a cover letter, CV or GitHub profile link to training@bigbite.net before 31st January 2020.

Alternatively, if you’d just like to have a chat about this program and find out more about how your current skill level would fit within the Big Bite engineering structure, you can get in touch with our Head of Marketing, Sarah, at sarah@bigbite.net.
