Since first opening its doors in the 19th century, the V&A has sought to enrich lives by sharing the research, knowledge and enjoyment of creativity and design with the widest possible audience. As a result, today it welcomes visitors from across the globe to its family of art design and performance museums. The museum holds a permanent collection of over 2.8 million objects, books and archives which showcase creativity spanning the last 5,000 years.

Ensuring that it engages with younger audiences, the organisation has also recently renovated and rebranded its Bethnal Green museum dedicated entirely to children. Following an extensive refurbishment, Young V&A – formerly known as the Museum of Childhood – brings together 2,000 objects in surroundings that aim to spark imagination, play and design. Now the V&A has also unveiled mused, its new online destination created with – and for – young people to have fun with all things art, design, fashion, music and gaming, powered by a custom WordPress CMS developed by Big Bite.

Built by our team in close collaboration with the V&A’s visual design team, the publishing system enables its in-house teams to quickly create pages and posts with highly interactive content to boost engagement. With easy-to-use templates covering a huge range of dynamic content formats – covering everything from polls and personality quizzes to profiles and how-to guides – the CMS fully leverages the flexibility and extensibility of the WordPress platform and its in-built block editor.

To support inclusivity, our templates have also undergone robust testing to ensure that every page produced via the custom CMS adheres to comprehensive accessibility standards, providing compatibility with screen readers and similar digital tools. In addition, the bespoke solution has been developed in accordance with the ICO children’s code, GDPR, and COPPA rules around protecting children online, allowing the V&A to share content in a safe and secure digital environment while inspiring the next generation of creative minds.
